If you're a veteran who needs official proof of your benefits or military service, there's a simple way to get it. The VA Benefits Letter Generator on VA.gov lets you download official letters from the Department of Veterans Affairs in just a few steps.

What Is the VA Benefits Letter Generator?

This free online tool allows veterans and their dependents to access and download official VA documents.

These letters can be used for job applications, housing verification, or any situation where you need written proof of your VA benefits or service history.

How to Use the Tool

  1. Go to VA.gov and find the letter download page
  2. Sign in using a verified Login.gov or ID.me account
  3. Choose the letter you need and download it

If you don't have a verified account yet, you can create one through either Login.gov or ID.me. The verification process helps protect your personal information from fraud.

What Letters Can You Download?

Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to access:

  • Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter
  • Benefit Verification Letter
  • Service Verification Letter
  • Proof of Service Card
  • Civil Service Preference Letter
  • Commissary Letter
  • Health-related documents (like prescription drug coverage proof)

Important: If you need a Certificate of Eligibility for a VA home loan, you'll need to use a different tool on VA.gov specifically for housing documents.

Before You Download

The VA will ask you to check the address on file, since it will appear on your letter. You can update it if needed, but your letter is still valid even if an old address is listed.

Need Help?

If you have trouble using the tool, call MyVA411 at 800-698-2411. TTY support is available at 711.
